Many years ago, merchants of the Washington Street Mall would set up and decorate themed scarecrows throughout the Mall for the autumn season. This year, the Washington Street Mall Business Improvement District brought back the tradition! Among the Mall’s already famous fall décor, unique scarecrows now line the Mall, creating a picturesque and fun autumn atmosphere. The District also made it a contest. Businesses were invited to pick a lamppost or other location on the Mall and create and decorate a scarecrow as they wanted. Sixteen different businesses participated and a wide variety of unique scarecrows were created. Deputy Mayor Lorraine Baldwin and City Councilman Shaine Meier of the City of Cape May were judges and picked the top three scarecrows. First Place: Whale’s Tale – Mermaid Second Place: It’s A Breeze – Mr. Crabby Third Place: Fins Bar & Grille – Fisherman All of our merchant’s scarecrows embrace the fun atmosphere of fall on the Mall! Dear Washington Street Mall Friends, Patrons, Vendors, and Business Associates, Join the Washington Street Mall Business Improvement District (BID) this summer in helping to sponsor our "Tunesday Tuesdays" Music on the Mall series! Our goal is to bring visitors out to shop and listen to some live music on all three of the blocks of the Mall between 5pm and 7pm on Tuesdays this summer. The BID promotes the economic and general welfare of the District and the City. Through special assessments imposed on merchant properties within the District, funds are used for special events, holiday decorations, landscaping, marketing, and other uses. Recently, merchants have chipped in to have a few bands on the Mall during the Christmas season, with more and more musicians added each year. Santa Claus and his Mrs. have also been able to visit the Mall more often, especially with all of the live music taking place. Not to be outdone, the Easter Bunny showed up at Easter providing photo opportunities with Mall visitors and the participants of the annual Easter Fashion Stroll, while Mall merchants once again overwhelmingly provided gift cards and prizes to the winners of the stroll! Improve we did, through donations from the Mall merchants and a little help from the City of Cape May, bistro-style lighting was added to the Mall making evenings on the Mall so much more spectacular! Additionally, being installed soon on Hill Walk is the first round of engraved personalized bricks (order yours online at washingtonstreetmall.com/bricks). As you can see, the BID has been incredibly busy continuing to make the heart of Cape May a first class destination.
