- Why You Should Engrave A Mall Brick for Your Special Someone this Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is a time to show love and appreciation to those closest to us. One unique and meaningful gift idea is an engraved brick on the Washington Street Mall. Personalize a brick with custom text, such as references to family, friends, Cape May vacations, memorials, shout-outs, and more. You can even add clip art or a custom logo. Here are several reasons why this is the perfect Valentine's Day gift for your special someone. Timeless Keepsake: An engraved brick is a timeless memento that can be cherished for years to come. It serves as a tangible reminder of the love and memories shared, making it a meaningful and sentimental gift. Personalization: With the option to engrave a message or name, the brick can be customized to reflect the individual relationship. Whether it's a heartfelt message, the names of the couple, or the date of a special occasion, the brick will be one-of-a-kind. Support for the Community: The Washington Street Mall is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and the funds raised from the sale of engraved bricks help to support community events and improvements. By purchasing a brick, you're not only giving a gift to your special someone, but you're also giving back to the community. A Walk Down Memory Lane: The Washington Street Mall is a charming and historic shopping and dining area, making it a perfect place for a romantic stroll. The engraved brick adds an extra layer of sentimentality to the walk, allowing the couple to relive memories and reminisce about their time together. Lasting Impression: An engraved brick is a lasting impression that can be passed down from generation to generation. It's a gift that continues to give for years to come and serves as a reminder of the love shared on Valentine's Day. More information and directions on how to place an order can be found here. Bricks will be placed between the City Centre Mall and Casale's Shoes in Hill Walk, just off the 400 block of Washington Street. - Sunday Socials at Fins Allow You to Give Back AND Enjoy Sunday Funday!
Admittedly, the months of January and February are typically quiet in Cape May. The holiday season has come to an end, and the excitement of a new warmer spring and summer season has not arrived yet. Many business owners take these months to research new products, complete renovations, and give their staff some well deserved time off. Many of our businesses do remain open, but they typically reduce their hours. However, there is still plenty to do in the heart of Cape May during the winter, and a highlight are the Sunday Socials at Fins Bar & Grille, where local nonprofits benefit and the community can come together to enjoy a winter day in Cape May. Sunday Socials take place every Sunday through February. From 10:30am to 2:30pm, 50% of sales at Fins goes to a selected Cape May County nonprofit. Fins offers a special brunch menu in addition to their normal lunch menu, and a build-your-own Bloody Mary and mimosa station is set up. There is also live music from various local musicians starting at 11am. Fins chooses from a variety of Cape May County nonprofits to be the beneficiaries of the Sunday Socials. Many of them do their own promoting of the event, which results in even more people coming to the heart of Cape May. At the end of each event, Fins publicly presents a check to the nonprofits. The lineup of Sunday Social beneficiaries is below: January 8: Kiwanis Club of Cape May January 15: Cape May County Coast Guard Community Foundation January 22: Soroptimist International of Cape May County January 29: New Jersey Audubon February 5: Cape May Stage February 12: Animal Outreach of Cape May County February 19: East Lynne Theater Company February 26: Love Blue Inc. The team at Fins truly enjoys being able to provide a way for folks to give back to local organizations that are truly making a difference in Cape May County, while also creating a unique Sunday funday celebration during Cape May winters. Thousands of dollars have been donated since 2016 when Sunday Socials started, and the Cape May community is excited to keep this tradition going. We'll see you on the Mall (and at Sunday Socials)!
- The Washington Street Mall's Cameo in Holiday Movies
The Washington Street Mall appeared in a few Christmas movies that premiered this holiday season! A Christmas Cookie Catastrophe, Christmas at the Golden Dragon, and When I Think of Christmas, three movies that aired on The Hallmark Channel, featured drone video of Washington Street that was taken during one of the snowstorms that we experienced in January 2022. The footage was likely stock footage as the movies were neither set in nor filmed primarily in Cape May. In A Christmas Cookie Catastrophe, Annie faces her first obstacle as CEO of Cooper's Cookies when grandma's secret recipe is stolen. While investigating the theft, she works with local baker Sam to recreate the beloved recipe. Starring Rachel Boston and Victor Webster. In Christmas at the Golden Dragon, with the town's landmark Chinese restaurant closing, two siblings find themselves reevaluating their lives alongside the restaurant's loyal patrons. Starring Kara Wang, Osric Chau, Sara Canning, Antonio Cupo and Barbara Niven. In When I Think of Christmas, Sara comes home for Christmas to help her mom move, reconnects with a past love, and makes a surprising discovery for a holiday they will all remember. Starring Shenae Grimes-Beech, Niall Matter and Beth Broderick. The drone footage in the movies is of the 300 block of Washington Street covered in snow and lit up by our bistro-style string lights and our Christmas lights. One aerial shot is looking east down Washington Street from above Perry Street, while another looks west from above Jackson Street. Business such as Queen May, Fralinger's Salt Water Taffy, Tisha's Fine Dining, Whale's Tale, and Victorious can be seen. Many folks have always said that the heart of Cape May looks like it could be in a Hallmark movie, especially during Christmastime. Now, we can say that it is! We'll see you on the Mall! - Sean and Aidan's Hearts Live On in Cape May
Monique St. John lost her husband, Sean Patrick Dougherty, ten years ago from heart issues and, ultimately, Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). She was looking to do something to honor his legacy when she connected with Aidan’s Heart Foundation and Christy Marshall-Silva. The result was a partnership with the City of Cape May to add life-saving equipment to public areas in Cape May. In 2011, Aidan’s Heart Foundation began after Christy’s 7-year-old son, Aidan, died from Sudden Cardiac Arrest, with no history of heart issues or warning signs. Learning that 9,000 youth die from SCA each year, and that the chances of survival for a victim of SCA are less than 5%, Christy founded Aidan's Heart Foundation to better protect the hearts of youth. When Monique and Christy connected, they learned that their loved ones had a lot in common, including a love for the City of Cape May. In honor of Aidan and Sean, they decided to donate an automated external defibrillator (AED) to the community as a special way to give back and help keep Cape May heart-safe. An AED is instrumental (along with calling 911) in responding to a sudden cardiac emergency. Firefighter David Jackson of the Cape May Fire Department worked directly with Monique and Christy to coordinate AED installation. AEDs have been placed outdoors along the Washington Street Mall on The Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May Towne Crier and on the Cape May MAC Information Booth for better visibility to anyone in need. The outdoor AED cabinets were also donated by Aidan’s Heart Foundation through the generosity of donors. Jim Schatzle and Paul Logan of Team Life, Inc. aided in the procurement and delivery of the AED donated by Aidan’s Heart Foundation. The company trains people how to respond to critical situations, including cardiac arrest and other first-aid emergencies. “Every minute without CPR and an AED being applied to the person in Sudden Cardiac Arrest, survival decreases by 10%. The average response time for EMS in America is 8 to 12 minutes. Therefore, we are so grateful to be part of this AED donation by Aidan’s Heart Foundation.” For additional information about Aidan’s Heart Foundation, visit www.aidansheart.org.
