Personalize A Washington Street Mall Brick Strolling the Washington Street Mall has long been a great and memorable experience for tens of thousands of Cape May visitors and locals alike. You can engrave those memories into one of the Mall's bricks! Personalize a brick with custom text, such as references to family, friends, Cape May vacations, memorials, shout-outs, and more. You can even add an icon or a custom logo. All proceeds will be used to enhance and maintain the uniqueness of the Mall. CURRENT TIMELINE : For bricks paid for after June 30, 2025, we will likely follow the following timeline: bricks paid for from July 1 through December 31 will be installed between the following March 1 and July 1, and bricks paid for from January 1 through June 30 will be installed between the following September 1 and February 1. For bricks paid for prior to July 1, 2025, please see the timeline below. Please note that with the process and procedures of our engraving vendor, the actual engraving can take time. Font and icons may differ a bit from what is shown in pictures and in listed icon options. There is no guarantee on the wear or readability of the bricks and the Washington Street Mall Management Company, Inc./the City of Cape May reserves the right to remove and dispose of a personalized brick that becomes non-legible or damaged, that violates any of these terms and conditions, or needs to be removed for any type of construction project. The bricks are the property of the Washington Street Mall Management Company, Inc./the City of Cape May and cannot be removed by the person who placed the order. Those ordering a personalized brick are responsible for making sure the personalization is correct when they submit their order. If a person submits an incorrect personalization and that brick is installed, it cannot be removed. Bricks will only be removed if an error is made on our end. While the origins of Salt Water Taffy remain a mystery, one thing is for certain. No one did more to promote this popular confection than Joseph Fralinger. A former glassblower and fish merchant, Joseph returned from Philadelphia to his Atlantic City roots in the mid 1880s. After taking a job with a bricklayer, he earned enough money to open a small concession on the Atlantic City Boardwalk from which he sold fruit, soda, and the latest summer sensation, "lemonade." By 1884, Joseph was approached to take over a taffy stand on Applegate Pier. He agreed and began to perfect his own recipe for Salt Water Taffy, introducing his first batch of molasses taffy in 1885. Throughout the years he developed a number of new flavors, eventually offering Atlantic City's largest selection with 25. As Fralinger's grew to six locations, he decided that Salt Water Taffy should return home with resort visitors. Using experiences from his fish merchant days, he packed one pound oyster boxes with Salt Water Taffy, making it the first "Atlantic City Souvenir". The one-pound box still remains the most popular souvenir over 125 years later, and by 1899, Salt Water Taffy had become a household word across America!
